college life

phew. the first day of finals week is over. success.

now i'm sitting here chillin on my computer. my roommate is sitting across from me writing a paper. she is super stressed out, earphones in, music blasting, dead to the world, and breathing really loudly. i don't think she realizes how loudly she is breathing; it's kindof funny.

and behind me my other roommate and her fiance have been arguing for the last 20 minutes about what to eat tonight. she wants to go to his place for food, but he wants to stay here. she is criticizing his rice-a-roni cooking skills and he is refusing to take her over to his place for food. but then the sit there and repeatedly declare their love for each other and call each other cutie pet names. it's slightly amusing. and nauseating. two engaged roommates. yeah.

oh, wait, heidi just finished her paper. yay for her!

and now i'm off to bed because tomorrow finals week begins for real. studying, tests, you name it. yeah. i'm excited!

so how has your week been so far?

my new best friend.

hi, my name is annette. i am a half-scale, size 10 dress form model. melanie's sewing teacher gave her the assignment to design a pattern from scratch and make a dress for me. i'm so excited!and so is melanie! she could hardly wait to get started on making my dress. she had never designed anything before, and was a little unsure about her creative abilities.

she quickly got to work, though. this is what her work station looked like.
she developed the initial pattern pieces out of tissue paper and started pinning them on to see how they would fit. those pins were pokey!

after a lot of measuring re-drawing, the pattern pieces were finally developed.
and here is her lovely logo! apparently melanie has a cool brother named mike who developed this logo; i'm sure that he is okay with her using it for this project.

oooh! and look at this pretty fabric melanie chose for my dress! this picture is poopy for color, but it's a lovely deep plum-colored crepe-backed satin....mmm...satin.

so melanie got started with her sewing. melanie is a great seamstress, but this project was unlike anything she had ever done before, and it was almost too much for her. tears were shed, swear words were barely held back, sweat poured, and this was a common situation. look at that face, so worn and frustrated.

however, after adjusting some pattern pieces two...or three...times, things started coming together quite nicely.

look! a zipper! can't you see it? oh, that's right, it's an invisible zipper. the mark of a good invisible zipper is when you can barely see it. i think melanie did a pretty darn good job on that zipper.

and look! sleeves! oh i am so glad to have sleeves so that i can be modest. i felt a little bad, though, because melanie kept saying that she hated sleeves. i guess they were pretty hard for her to attach to the bodice, but she finally did, and they are beautiful!

and now my skirt is complete! melanie and i fought for a while over this skirt. it wasn't fitting quite right, melanie kept calling me fat, and she got really really upset when she had to repeatedly unpick and let out seam after seam so that the ruffle would attach to the skirt. it finally worked out, though, and melanie was so happy. she apologized for getting so mad at me, and i forgave her of course, and we are best friends again.

now all that was left was the hem! melanie and i talked it over for a long time, and we decided that the best way to hem my dress would be to sew a blind catch stitch by hand. by hand.

so that's what melanie did today for 2 hours. 2 hours.

and.....TADA! here it is, my beautiful dress! i am so very, very happy!

melanie is very happy too. this is the hardest thing she has ever accomplished in her life. however, she told me that she feels like she was born to design clothes. she loved making this dress for me. i wish i could return the favor and make a beautiful dress for her, but i have no arms.

oh well. melanie and i are still best friends and i love her very much.

random saturday adventures

so i'm at the library right now, and the guy a few computers down from me has his headphones on and is singing along quite audibly. haha.

just got back from the football game, usu lost to nevada 32-35. grr. we were so close! at the very end, usu went in for the kickoff, and it was caught by one of our guys on the 40-yard-line, we totally could have run or played for a touchdown, but the refs called an off-side penalty. we had to kick it again, and our defense just couldn't hold back nevada long enough before the clock ran out and the game was over. it was a sad game.

but, it is a beautiful day! the sun is shining, there is not a cloud in the sky, it's been a great weekend. we didn't have school yesterday, and i did....most of my homework, and now i'm posting this post instead of finishing up the rest of my homework. oh well, it's not due til tuesday anyways.

ah...college life. gotta love it.

jsyk...

i know it's been a while since i've posted to this blog, but that may be because i have 18 credits, 3 choir meetings/week, choir practice 5 days/week, mountains of homework, friends to hang out with, boys to flirt with, and other such various activities.

all of these might be the reason that this blog has been neglected...but the real reason is because i actually have two other blogs! woot!

it's really not that exciting, they are my homework medium for two of my classes, one is "dress and humanities," where i am doing my portfolio on the social reform of the 19th century antifashionists when women started wearing pants; you can check it out here.

the other blog is for my "instructional technology for teachers" class...yeah. it's a weird class, but we just finished our iMovie projects, and i'm pretty proud of my little video, if i do say so myself. :) you can check out my video here if you want.

wishes do come true!

it snowed in logan today. :) i started out the day in a t-shirt, jeans, flipflops, and a windbreaker. i was soon soaked and frozen, but happy as i sped home to change into my skinny jeans, boots, scarf, gloves, and coat. yay winter!

hurry winter!

reasons why winter can't come fast enough for me:

1. i'm running out of summer clothes; i have maybe 2 pairs of shorts. but i have like 7 pairs of jeans and i can't wait to wear them without being really hot all day. i'm excited to wear my scarves and boots and gloves and hats and sweaters that i've been collecting on sale throughout the year. my fashion tastes are built for winter, not summer.

2. brighton, solitude, powder mountain, kelly's, targhee. need i say more?

3. ryan and julianne and sam are coming home for christmas! i haven't seen them in over a year! i have been informed that they are going to make me play hundreds of hands of rook with them, but it will be worth it. :)

bring on the cold, i'm ready for the fun!
